Focus on STEM: Insights from Google DeepMind’s CEO

Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind and a Nobel Prize winner, recently shared his thoughts on education during an event at SXSW London. He believes that if he were a student today, he would still focus on STEM subjects—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—despite the rapid changes brought by artificial intelligence (AI) in the job market.

Hassabis emphasized the importance of understanding basic concepts in mathematics and science to grasp how AI systems work. He mentioned that while AI is revolutionizing various industries, having a solid foundation in these subjects remains crucial for future success.

Additionally, he encouraged students to familiarize themselves with AI tools. "It’s essential to experiment with the latest AI technologies to find the best ways to utilize them," he said. This hands-on experience, he argues, will be vital as companies increasingly incorporate AI into their operations.

Looking ahead, Hassabis predicts that the next five to ten years will see the creation of new jobs that require tech-savvy skills. He believes that the impact of AI will be comparable to the Industrial Revolution, suggesting that while some jobs may be lost, many new opportunities will emerge for those equipped with the right skills.

Hassabis spoke about how today’s students will grow up as "AI natives," similar to how earlier generations adapted to the internet. As tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta begin using AI for various tasks, being comfortable with these tools will be indispensable.

During a recent developer conference, Hassabis and Google co-founder Sergey Brin estimated that artificial general intelligence, the point at which AI matches human capabilities, could be achieved by around 2030. This underscores the urgency for students to prepare for a future where AI plays a significant role.

Even with companies recently scaling back on hiring for positions that can be automated, Hassabis remains optimistic. He believes that AI will ultimately enhance human capabilities for those who know how to leverage it effectively.
