Kyiv Faces Drone and Missile Strikes in Early Morning Assault

In a distressing turn of events, Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was hit by a wave of drone and missile attacks early Saturday morning. The strikes resulted in fires and debris scattered across various neighborhoods, injuring at least eight people, as reported by the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko.

Eyewitnesses from Reuters noted hearing a series of explosions and witnessing multiple drones flying overhead, causing significant alarm throughout the city. Mayor Klitschko confirmed that two people needed hospitalization and mentioned that air defense units were actively responding to the threat.

Images shared online revealed smoke rising from several buildings, with flames visible as emergency services worked diligently to extinguish the fires. An orange glow lit up parts of the skyline while smoke drifted across the horizon.

According to Klitschko, drone fragments struck an apartment building in the Solomynskyi district on the west bank of the Dnipro River. This resulted in a fire affecting both a residential and a non-residential building in the area.

Timur Tkachenko, who is in charge of Kyiv’s military administration, stated that a fire also erupted in the Dniprovskyi district on the opposite bank. Additional reports confirmed fires in the Obolon area in the northern suburbs, along with debris falling onto a shopping center nearby. Officials noted that drone remains were found scattered across other neighborhoods as well.

An air alert was in place for over two hours following the initial strike.

These overnight attacks came after several days of Ukrainian drone operations targeting various locations within Russia, including its capital, Moscow, totaling around 800 strikes. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had promised a response to these Ukrainian attacks just a day before the striking escalation.
