India’s Diplomatic Efforts on Counter-Terrorism and Recent Military Tensions
On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a conversation with Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, focusing on India’s deliberate and calculated approach to tackling terrorism. Jaishankar highlighted that any escalation from adversaries would lead to a strong response from India.
In a message on social media, he stated, “Had a telecon with DPM & FM @Antonio_Tajani of Italy. Discussed India’s targeted and measured response to firmly counter terrorism. Any escalation will see a strong response.”
Additionally, Jaishankar had discussions with Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, stressing that India remains measured in its actions yet will firmly respond to any escalation.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, where they observed the signing of agreements concerning customs cooperation and medical product regulations during the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting.
Amid these diplomatic exchanges, tensions escalated when Pakistan launched eight missiles targeting regions including Satwari and Samba. Thankfully, Indian air defense systems intercepted all the missiles. This attack mirrored tactics used previously by Hamas in Israel, where multiple smaller rockets were deployed against urban areas.
Explosions were reported as Indian air defenses engaged drones over Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, there was a complete blackout in places like Bikaner and Jalandhar, as well as cities in Jammu and Kashmir.
In response to Pakistan’s aggressive actions on Thursday, which included targeting Jammu, Indian air defense units retaliated. Following a prior terror attack in Pahalgam, India executed Operation Sindoor, aiming at terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
During a media briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reiterated that any escalation by Pakistan would be met with an appropriate response. He clarified that India’s previous actions were measured and specifically targeted non-civilian, non-military sites, aimed at thwarting terrorist activities.
Misri emphasized, “The original escalation was by Pakistan, and our actions were a necessary response. We do not aim to escalate matters, but we will protect our interests.”
The situation remains tense, with ongoing developments as both nations navigate these challenging dynamics.
