Title: Yashasvi Jaiswal Struggles Ahead of Test Series Against New Zealand
India’s opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal is facing a tough time with his batting just before India’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand. Jaiswal, who is usually a first-choice opener along with KL Rahul, has not been able to score runs during his last three innings in New Zealand. His latest attempt came on the first day of the second unofficial Test against New Zealand-A on October 31, where he once again had a disappointing performance.
India-A is participating in a three-match red-ball series against New Zealand-A to prepare for the upcoming Test matches. After struggling in both innings of the first unofficial Test, Jaiswal was unable to turn his luck around in the second match at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
His challenges at the crease have raised concerns as he has not been able to find his form, despite having several chances to spend time at the wicket during the tour games. In the first unofficial Test, he scored only 22 runs across two innings—17 in the first innings and just 5 in the second, where a sharp bouncer from Zak Gibson led to his dismissal.
Unfortunately, Jaiswal continued to struggle in the second match, which presented him another chance to regain his confidence before the Test series begins.
Opening Trouble for India-A
The batting troubles for India-A weren’t limited to just Jaiswal. On the opening morning of the match in Christchurch, New Zealand-A’s bowlers took full advantage of the conditions, putting pressure on the Indian team. In the first hour alone, the hosts took four wickets, with Fraser Sheat leading the charge and exploiting the movement off the pitch.
Jaiswal was the first to go, getting caught in front of the stumps on the very first ball of the match from Fraser Sheat. Although Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan managed to build a decent partnership, Sudharsan was dismissed after playing a careless shot and was caught behind, handing New Zealand-A a crucial wicket.
Yash Rathod also fell to poor shot selection, and Padikkal, a standout performer in the previous Test, scored 80 runs before losing his wicket after attempting a risky shot. Smaran Ravichandran was out for a golden duck after being trapped leg-before-wicket.
Fraser Sheat claimed three of the four wickets within that turbulent spell, allowing New Zealand-A to gain an early advantage.
Jurel and Washington Step Up
With wickets tumbling regularly, Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar had the tough job of stabilizing the innings for India-A. They took a cautious approach in the last hour of the second session, focusing on surviving against New Zealand-A’s bowlers instead of taking unnecessary risks.
The pair managed to score 23 runs from 87 balls during a challenging period, bringing some much-needed stability after the early collapse. However, India-A still required a significant partnership to recover from the early setbacks.
As the innings progressed, the team hoped that Jurel and Washington could hold their ground and give the middle order a chance to establish a more solid total.
For Jaiswal, this second unofficial Test represents yet another missed chance to restore his confidence before the Tests against New Zealand begin. Having faced difficulties in three consecutive innings on tour, the upcoming games are crucial for him to find his rhythm ahead of the international matches.
