Global Billionaires Face Major Wealth Losses
Robin Zeng, the chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the largest battery producer in the world, has experienced the most significant loss in wealth globally, with his net worth dropping by $5.9 billion. According to real-time data from Forbes, Zeng’s total assets now stand at $37.3 billion, placing him 61st on the list of the world’s richest individuals.
In recent financial news, CATL’s stock price fell by 3.3% on Thursday, marking a total decline of 42% this year. This downturn is attributed to profits increasing at a slower pace than revenue, which has raised concerns about decreasing profit margins and growing competition, alongside the removal of certain tax incentives in China. The company’s profits for the third quarter of this year rose by 14.5% compared to last year, totaling $3.17 billion. However, this figure fell short of analyst expectations and was a significant decrease from the previous quarter’s growth rate of 36.5%.
Gautam Adani, who is the chairman of the Adani Group and India’s second-richest man, ranked fourth in wealth losses globally with a decline of $2.9 billion, bringing his net worth down to $75.3 billion, which places him 28th on the global scale. Shares of Adani Enterprises, the leading firm of his conglomerate that operates in various sectors including airports and mining, dropped by 1.8% on Thursday and have seen a 15% decline over the past month. Additionally, GQG Partners, a major investor in the Adani Group, sold off more than $1.35 billion worth of shares during the last quarter, signaling possible concerns among institutional investors regarding the conglomerate’s stability.
Japan’s billionaire Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank Group, also faced a setback, losing $2.8 billion of his wealth on Thursday. His net worth has now decreased to $53.3 billion, ranking him 34th worldwide. SoftBank, known for its investments in companies like Apple and OpenAI, saw a 6.9% drop in its stock price recently, bringing the total decline to 23% over the past six months, amid worries about high debt levels.
Finally, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google, experienced significant valuation drops as well. Page lost $4.3 billion, reducing his net worth to $274.7 billion, while Brin’s wealth dipped by $3.9 billion to $252.8 billion.
This recent wave of wealth losses underscores the volatility and challenges currently facing some of the world’s wealthiest individuals and their respective companies.
