As protests erupted in France on Saturday, they quickly transformed into a wider movement, capturing attention on a global scale. Prominent liberal activist Vijay Prashad took to social media to share his thoughts, linking the protests in Paris with those happening in New Delhi and Buenos Aires. He said, “Let fury have the hour, anger can be power,” echoing sentiments from the punk band The Clash.

Prashad, who is the director of Tricontinental Ltd.—a nonprofit supported by tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham—underscored how these protests in France are entwined with a global narrative of unrest, involving a network of socialist and communist groups from various regions around the world.

This weekend’s protests saw many young people taking to the streets to express their frustrations over educational conditions—highlighting much deeper issues within French society. A recent investigation noted 54 different organizations involved in these protests, ranging from communist groups to labor unions and various advocacy organizations. Surprisingly, only about one-third of these organizations comprised student groups.

Groups like the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vests) and the leftist political party La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) threw their weight behind the protests, which began with a focus on education but expanded to address broader political issues including austerity measures and police action.

A coalition of 28 communist and socialist organizations has already begun organizing a coordinated response across 12 European countries, urging students to participate in strikes and demonstrations under the rallying cry: “Fight for Our Future, Not Their Wars!” The upcoming mobilization represents their push against rising living costs and military expenditures.

Media outlets from within this coalition played critical roles in informing the public about the protests, framing the unrest in France as part of a larger story. Using images and stories from the protests, they highlighted the anger and determination of students and workers alike.

The student protests, which have gained various forms of support, are only intensifying as the organizations behind them prepare for further actions. As the country looks forward to the presidential elections next year, the underlying tensions displayed in these protests likely represent significant challenges ahead for France.
