US Questions Europe’s Support for ‘Secondary Tariffs’ Against India

U.S. Treasury Secretary Addresses Tariffs and Energy Imports in Recent Statements

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has made headlines following comments regarding trade policies with China and India. During a recent press conference in Stockholm, he mentioned his earlier request to European allies for support in imposing secondary tariffs on these countries, which they declined. His remarks raised questions about the U.S. position on the matter and the implications for international trade relations.

Bessent’s statements came shortly after the announcement of a temporary 60-day waiver on sanctions related to Russian oil. This waiver allows the U.S. to purchase Russian diesel, a point that has sparked debate and criticism. By shifting some blame onto European nations for not joining the U.S. in toughening tariffs, he appeared to defend the administration’s decision while targeting both China and India as part of the broader economic discussion.

Historically, efforts by the Trump administration to impose tariffs on China have shown a hesitance to confront the nation directly, leading many to question the effectiveness of the current strategy. In an interview with NBC News, Bessent did mention the possibility of the U.S. re-engaging with European partners, suggesting that the waivers were part of a larger diplomatic effort.

Bessent emphasized President Trump’s commitment to ending violence and referenced a bill that would provide flexibility in assessing the ongoing situation. He clarified that no sanctions had been lifted on Russian oil companies, asserting that the U.S. has taken a strong stance against the largest Russian energy firms, signaling that America remains focused on its sanctions policy.

In a pointed critique of Europe, Bessent accused the continent of heavily relying on Russian energy, highlighting that while the U.S. imported around $4 billion in Russian goods, including significant amounts of fertilizer, European nations were importing substantially more.

Turning to India, he acknowledged that despite diversifying its energy sources, the country’s dependency on Russian oil continued due to external factors, particularly the U.S. sanctions on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which have significantly impacted energy flows. With around 80% of its energy needs met through imports, India finds itself in a complicated situation.

As discussions around energy policy and trade continue, the U.S. government’s approach to China, India, and Russia remains a focal point in the evolving landscape of global economic relations.
