Elon Musk Responds to Neuralink User: ‘I’m Linked from Dawn to Dusk, It’s a Life-Changer’

Elon Musk recently responded to a heartfelt post from Jake Schneider, a patient who received a brain implant from Neuralink. In a message shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), Schneider opened up about how the implant has transformed his life.

Musk commented on Schneider’s experience, saying, “Neuralink will help millions of people.” Schneider, who is living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), described the device as an essential part of his life. He stated that he feels connected to it from the moment he wakes up until he goes to sleep, calling it both an extension of his body and a crucial lifeline that has helped him regain some independence taken away by his illness.

In his own words, Schneider shared, “It’s become an extension of my body and a lifeline that has made me feel more human. Neuralink has given me some of the independence that ALS has stolen from me.”

ALS is a progressive condition that gradually affects nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle movements, meaning that as it advances, patients can struggle to walk, speak, or perform daily tasks independently.

Neuralink’s brain-computer interface (BCI) technology aims to read neural signals, enabling users to control devices just by thinking. This could be game-changing for people who have lost the use of their limbs, offering a new way to engage with computers and other connected devices.

In a related update, Schneider’s remarks came in response to a report from Neura Pod, revealing that Neuralink has now gathered over 50,000 hours of brain activity data. The very first human participant, known as @ModdedQuad, alone contributed nearly 10,000 hours to this impressive tally.

The Neura Pod post highlighted the significance of this data collection, stating, “Imagine what can happen as this brain data scales to billions of hours. Neuralink will have a data pipeline that no other company will have.” Ryan Tanaka from Neura Pod predicted that this number would increase rapidly, underscoring the extensive research being done on the implants over time.

Although such data collection is promising, it doesn’t solely determine how effective or safe this technology is for different patients. Researchers are keeping a close eye on Neuralink’s developments as they explore the potential of brain-computer interfaces to assist individuals with paralysis and other movement disorders. For patients like Schneider, the hope is that this technology can meaningfully improve their daily lives and help them engage more fully with the world around them.
