Trump and Modi May Meet at ASEAN Summit in Manila
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Manila on November 16 for the ASEAN summit, and reports suggest that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to attend. While details of a possible meeting between the two leaders have not been confirmed, officials believe that such a discussion could help advance ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that both nations are moving toward a resolution, and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor remains optimistic that key issues have been addressed, paving the way for a deal. The last time Trump and Modi met was during the G7 summit in France earlier this year.
Trump’s visit to Manila comes as he heads to China for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The attendance of leaders from Australia and Japan also raises the possibility of a Quad summit on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting. The Quad, which includes the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan, has been planning this summit for two years now.
If the Quad summit does not occur in Manila, there’s another chance for it to take place in Florida during the G20 meeting in December. Meanwhile, Quad foreign ministers are scheduled to meet later this month at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta.
As discussions heat up, the potential for meaningful dialogue and cooperation among these nations continues to grow.
