Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Shine at Denmark Open
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have continued their excellent performance at the Denmark Open by reaching the women’s doubles quarterfinals. They achieved this after a strong win against Indonesia’s Rachel Allessya and Rose Febi Setianingrum on Thursday, winning in straight games.
The talented Indian pair, who recently earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in New Delhi, overcame the fifth-seeded Indonesian duo with scores of 21-16 and 21-17 in just 45 minutes. Next up, Treesa and Gayatri will face the winners of the match between Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam and Malaysia’s second-seeded team, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.
In a mixed day for the Indian team, Ashmita Chaliha unfortunately exited the women’s singles competition, losing to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi with scores of 18-21 and 10-21 in the pre-quarterfinals.
Srikanth Battles Hard Against Alex Lanier
In the men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth showcased glimpses of his past glory but could not keep up the pace against reigning world champion Alex Lanier. The match ended in a tough three-game defeat for Srikanth in the pre-quarterfinals.
The 33-year-old Indian, known for his impressive career in 2017 where he won four titles, managed to secure the first game against the 21-year-old French player. Srikanth started strong, taking control with his clever net play and impressive shots, leading 11-5 at the interval. However, Lanier quickly adjusted and turned the match around.
After some guidance from his coach to focus on his backcourt attacks, Lanier regained his footing. Despite Srikanth’s efforts, including a brief lead in the final game, Lanier heightened the intensity and managed to prevail, winning with scores of 11-21, 21-15, 21-15 after 66 minutes of play.
Overall, it was a day filled with highs and lows for India’s badminton players at the Denmark Open, but the spirit and determination displayed were commendable.
