Asia/India – Prayer for Peace in Manipur Amid Rising Violence During Rosary Month

Miao, 15 October 2026 – Manipur has been experiencing ongoing violence for the past four years, with reports of new clashes almost daily. Most of the victims are innocent villagers and women, and the situation seems to be getting worse, with divisions growing deeper. What began as a conflict between two groups has escalated into a complex crisis, with no resolution in sight. In response, Father Felix Anthony, Secretary for Social Communications in the Diocese of Miao, emphasized the importance of prayer and solidarity as vital resources during such turbulent times.

The Diocese of Miao shares a close connection with the State of Manipur, both geographically and through various humanitarian efforts. Situated in a remote area of northeastern India, the Diocese of Miao in Arunachal Pradesh and the Archdiocese of Imphal in Manipur are part of the same Bishops’ Conference in the region. This connection has fostered a collaborative relationship, with many priests and missionaries serving in both areas.

Since May 2023, Manipur has witnessed a violent ethnic conflict primarily between the Meitei majority and the Kuki tribal minority, with the Naga people also becoming involved recently. This unrest has resulted in around 260 deaths, widespread destruction, and over 60,000 people displaced from their homes. In light of this crisis, the Diocese of Miao has been active in delivering humanitarian assistance, including food, medicine, and supplies, to help those in need.

Bishop George Pallipparambil of Miao has been vocal in calling for an end to the violence in the region. He has encouraged reconciliation efforts and highlighted the importance of community prayer. Recently, during the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, members of the diocese gathered online for a prayer vigil, asking for peace and unity among the Kuki, Meitei, and Naga groups.

During the vigil, participants prayed together, using the Rosary as a tool for peace. Bishop Pallipparambil reminded everyone of the Rosary’s power in the face of conflict, encouraging regular prayer, especially during this special month dedicated to the Rosary.

Bishop Dennis Panipitchai, the Auxiliary Bishop of Miao, also urged the faithful to maintain their prayers for peace and described the Rosary as a means to find tranquility in challenging times.

The conflict in Manipur continues to evolve, with recent escalations leading to increased violence and instability. In early October 2026, new shootings in the hill districts resulted in the deaths of several civilians. The Chief Minister of the state, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, has condemned the violence and ordered security forces to be deployed in sensitive areas.

To further complicate matters, local rebel groups have declared a general strike known as “National Black Day” on 15 October 2026, protesting against Manipur’s annexation to India in 1949. This strike has exacerbated the region’s challenges, leaving many displaced individuals living in vulnerable conditions in relief camps.

Archbishop Linus Neli of Imphal is actively involved in mediating the conflict, urging leaders from the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities to cease the violence and work towards a peace agreement. Various civil society organizations and religious leaders are collaborating with local authorities to facilitate dialogue and open humanitarian routes to assist those affected by the crisis.

As Manipur faces significant challenges, the call for peace and unity remains strong, with prayers and community support playing a crucial role in navigating through these difficult times.
