Ranjeev Puri Aims for Historic Role in Michigan Politics
Ranjeev Puri, an Indian-American lawmaker in Michigan, is looking to make history as he seeks to become the first Indian-American Speaker of a state House in the U.S. His chances hinge on the outcome of the upcoming elections on November 3, where Democrats aim to gain control of the Michigan House of Representatives from Republicans.
At 42 years old, Puri currently holds the position of Democratic leader in the Michigan House, which is presently led by Republican Speaker Matt Hall. While Republicans dominate the 110-member chamber, Michigan’s governor is a Democrat, Gretchen Whitmer.
U.S. Congresswoman Haley Stevens has expressed her belief that the Democratic Party can flip the Michigan House and pave the way for Puri to take the top leadership position. “Michigan Dems are on the move. We are about to flip the state house and make Ranjeev Puri THE FIRST Indian American State House Speaker in the country,” she stated during her campaign for the Democrats.
In addition to his aspirations for the Speakership, Puri is also running for re-election and will face Republican candidate Allison Kay Fuller in the contest for his seat.
Who is Ranjeev Puri?
Ranjeev Puri was born around 1984 in Racine, Wisconsin, to Punjabi immigrants from India. He made history in 2020 by becoming the first Sikh-American elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, officially taking office in January 2021.
Before entering the political arena, Puri contributed to former President Barack Obama’s campaigns in 2008 and 2012. This experience fueled his passion for community service and public engagement.
Puri has a background in academics, holding a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, which he completed in 2014. He also worked in business development for Fiat Chrysler prior to his political career.
Since being elected, Puri has quickly risen through the ranks of the Democratic Party. He served as a Democratic whip and, by January 2025, became the party’s leader in the Republican-controlled House. His work in the legislature has focused on critical issues such as gun safety, infrastructure, and economic development, as well as budget discussions related to transportation in Michigan, which plays a significant role in the automotive industry.
Michigan is home to approximately 127,000 residents of Indian origin, making up about 1.27% of its population, according to the Indian American Voter Atlas. The upcoming elections will be crucial for Puri’s future in office and could significantly impact the representation of Indian-Americans in state politics across the United States.
