SA vs AUS, 1st Test Preview: Eight Years After Sandpapergate, Australia Seeks Redemption on South African Soil

Australia and South Africa Reignite Historic Rivalry in Test Series

After a long wait of eight years, the fierce rivalry between Australia and South Africa returns to Test cricket. The two teams will clash in a three-match series starting on October 9 in Durban, marking Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa since the notorious 2018 Sandpapergate scandal.

This series isn’t just about past controversies; it’s about securing a place at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently, Australia stands at the number one spot, with South Africa closely behind, making this series even more critical. Last year, South Africa triumphed over Australia by five wickets in the WTC final, and now Australia has the chance to avenge that defeat on South African soil.

The Sandpapergate incident, where Australian players were caught altering the ball with sandpaper, cast a long shadow on the team’s reputation. Key players from that era, including Steve Smith and Pat Cummins, are part of the current squad, but many team members have since moved on.

Australia Seeks Redemption

Australia comes into this series looking to prove themselves, sitting at the top of the WTC standings with eight wins in ten Tests. South Africa follows closely with three wins out of four matches. However, the Austalians haven’t won a Test series in South Africa since 2014, making this challenge particularly significant.

Despite concerns about the batting lineup—especially regarding Marnus Labuschagne, who hadn’t scored a Test century in over three years—his recent knock of 111 in a warm-up match has provided some reassurance. With other strong players like Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Cameron Green, along with the experience of Nathan Lyon, Australia hopes for a powerful performance.

Mitchell Starc has even compared the series to legendary sporting achievements, suggesting that winning home series in South Africa, India, and England, while also defending the ODI World Cup, would be a remarkable feat.

South Africa Celebrates a Return Home

For South Africa, this series holds special significance as it marks their first home Test since they claimed the 2023-25 WTC title by defeating Australia. The Proteas have had an impressive WTC cycle, securing victories in India and Australia, but now they face the challenge of maintaining their momentum.

However, they will be without star bowler Kagiso Rabada for the first Test due to injury, leaving a noticeable gap in their bowling attack. Anrich Nortje will make his return to Test cricket after a break and is expected to bring valuable pace as South Africa looks to maintain their competitive edge.

Exciting Challenges Ahead

As both teams prepare for this compelling clash, the first Test holds several compelling storylines: Australia’s return to the venue of the Sandpapergate scandal, the Proteas aiming to reinforce their status as world champions, and Nortje’s comeback to Test cricket.

The conditions in Durban suggest that fast bowlers could dominate, with history showing that batting first at this ground often yields success.

When to Catch the Action

Fans can watch the first Test between South Africa and Australia starting at 1 PM IST. Live streaming will be available on Fancode.
