OCBC Boosts Precious Metals Trading for Retail Investors
OCBC Bank has announced an exciting update to its mobile application, making it easier for everyday investors to trade in precious metals, specifically platinum and palladium bullion. As of August 11, retail customers can start investing in these metals in small amounts, beginning with just 0.01 ounces.
Based on prices from August 8, this small investment equates to approximately $23 for platinum and $18 for palladium. This new feature builds on the bank’s previous digital trading options for gold and silver that were rolled out back in October 2021. With these additions, OCBC is opening doors that were typically reserved for wealthier clients, allowing more people to access these valuable assets.
The bank’s research team holds an optimistic view on the future of these metals, predicting that platinum prices could surpass $2,000 and palladium could reach over $1,500 by the first half of 2027. As of June 2026, the prices were approximately $1,833 for platinum and $1,389 for palladium.
Unlike gold, which is often influenced by central bank activities and is seen as a safe store of value, the prices of platinum and palladium are mainly dictated by their use in various industries. Platinum plays a crucial role in automotive production, industrial activities, and hydrogen fuel cell technology, while palladium is essential for reducing emissions in vehicles. Due to their connection to sectors like automotive, manufacturing, and clean energy, the price movements of these metals can differ significantly from gold and silver.
Making Precious Metals More Accessible
The launch of trading in platinum and palladium is part of OCBC’s larger goal to make investing easier and more accessible for everyday investors. Tan Siew Lee, who heads the group wealth management at OCBC, emphasized that combining small-scale investments with a user-friendly digital platform lets more people take part in the precious metals market.
She stated, “We are strengthening our position as a leading wealth management provider and the preferred bank for precious metals.” However, she also noted that investing in platinum and palladium does come with its risks, as these metals can be quite volatile. Investors who are comfortable with this level of risk may find opportunities tied to resource scarcity and industrial demand.
OCBC has already observed strong interest in its existing digital metals platform. By 2025, the number of customers investing in gold and silver through the app had risen by 2.5 times compared to the previous year, showing continued demand even during times of market uncertainty.
