Shreyas Iyer Shines with Century as India Defeats West Indies in T20I Opener
Shreyas Iyer stepped onto the field in Lucknow with little idea of what awaited him. Just three days prior, he had celebrated a gold medal victory in men’s cricket at the Asian Games, and after a long journey home, he found himself thrown back into the excitement of international cricket without much time to rest.
Despite the rush, perhaps it was exactly what he needed.
In just a few hours, Iyer walked off the pitch with an impressive 102 runs to his name, marking his first T20I century and leading India to an emphatic eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the series opener.
“I felt so thrilled about my performance,” Iyer said, expressing his joy after the match. “I was really hoping to score my first century, and it finally happened. Dreams really do come true!”
A Quick Turnaround
The last few days had been busy for Iyer, who had just returned from the Asian Games, where India clinched the gold medal on October 3. By October 6, he was back in action for the national team, stepping into another cricket format.
He made it clear that he didn’t let the situation be an excuse. “We didn’t see it that way,” he commented.
Instead, he quickly adapted to the pitch and the circumstances. After India found itself at 35 for 2 before the fifth over, Iyer knew he had to take charge.
Taking Control
With Abhishek Sharma dismissed for 21 and Sanju Samson out for 11, Iyer took on the challenge. Partnering with Ishan Kishan, he anchored a remarkable unbeaten 137-run partnership that shifted momentum back to India.
Iyer displayed a mix of skill and aggression, hitting boundaries all around the ground. He seemed unfazed by fatigue or the situation, finding his rhythm as the innings progressed.
Reaching the Milestone
Iyer’s century came in thrilling fashion. He launched a ball over long-on for six to reach his hundred off just 42 balls, combining elegance with explosive batting that turned India’s chase into a straightforward task.
His score made history, being the highest by an Indian captain chasing in a T20I, breaking the previous record held by Virat Kohli.
In addition, Iyer noted that he had scored consecutive unbeaten hundreds at this venue, having also achieved this feat during the IPL earlier this year.
However, his personal triumph was only one part of the team’s success.
Earlier in the game, debutant Naman Dhir made a strong impression with three wickets, helping to limit the West Indies to 171 runs. Iyer praised Dhir for his performance, highlighting his readiness to seize opportunities when the ball was turning.
No Excuses
India breezed to 172 runs in just 14.4 overs, marking their tenth straight T20I victory.
For Iyer, this match held special significance. After a grueling trip and minimal preparation time, he initially felt disoriented upon arrival in Lucknow. Yet, he quickly shifted focus to leading the team.
When he left the field hours later, he had accomplished his first T20I century. What could have been a tough game turned into a fantastic night, as Iyer and the team bypassed any excuses, adapting to the match conditions and seizing the victory over the West Indies.
“Winning definitely feels different,” Iyer shared, reflecting on the night’s journey and his triumphant performance. By the end of the game, there was plenty for him to celebrate.
