India Clinches Gold to Retain Hockey Championship Crown

India’s hockey teams made history by achieving a remarkable golden sweep at the Asian Games. Just a day after the women’s team ended a 44-year search for their second gold medal, the men’s team defended their title. Under the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored twice, India triumphed over Malaysia with a score of 5-1 in the final held in Kakamigahara.

This is a significant moment as it’s the first time both the men’s and women’s teams have won gold medals at the same Asian Games. In previous attempts, they came close—like in 1982 when the men lost in the final and in 1998 when the women fell just short of victory.

Harmanpreet’s leadership has been vital for the men’s team, marking their first successful title defense with him at the helm. Former captain Manpreet Singh also made his mark, becoming the most decorated Indian player in Asian Games history with three gold medals. He has been instrumental in reviving India’s status in world hockey, helping bring home two Olympic bronze medals recently.

India’s hockey success at the Asian Games is remarkable. With three gold medals in the last four editions, the total now stands at five, making India the second-most successful team after Pakistan, who has eight titles. The team’s performance has raised expectations, creating pressure to maintain their dominance in the sport, especially given the surprises of past tournaments, like their unexpected loss to Malaysia in the semifinals back in 2018.

Despite a recent dip in form—finishing near the bottom in the Pro League and struggling at the World Cup in 2023—India showed resilience throughout the competition in Japan. They scored an impressive 49 goals in the pool stage but faced a challenge in the semifinals, needing a last-minute goal to edge past Pakistan after initially leading 3-0. This match taught them important lessons, leading them into the final without a hitch.

In the final against Malaysia, Harmanpreet struck first with a penalty corner in the 11th minute. Even after Malaysia equalized shortly after, India regained their composure and kept control. They dominated the game, earning a staggering 14 penalty corners, and scored at crucial moments through players like Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh, Shilanand Lakra, and Harmanpreet again, sealing the victory decisively.

Head coach Craig Fulton expressed pride in the team’s performance. He noted that the semifinal experience was crucial for their mindset going into the final. “We focused on our game plan and it paid off,” he said, stressing the importance of their victory for the team’s future goals, especially as they aim for success in the 2026 World Cup.

This golden achievement not only highlights the teams’ skills but promises a bright future as they prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, securing their places early on with this remarkable success.
