Four American Tourists Among Six Killed in Athens Explosion
In a tragic incident, four American tourists lost their lives in an explosion that destroyed a residential building near the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The blast occurred on Friday and also claimed the lives of two others, bringing the total to six fatalities, according to authorities.
The victims, believed to be two couples, were staying in a two-story building located in the historic Plaka district, a popular area known for its proximity to famous landmarks. They had planned to catch a flight from Athens airport later that day but failed to show up, raising concerns. Documents found at the scene confirmed their identity as U.S. citizens, as reported by local media.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, expressed her condolences in a post on social media, reflecting on the deep sadness surrounding their deaths.
Rescue teams worked diligently through the rubble on Saturday, recovering six bodies from the debris. Firefighters had been searching for an elderly couple who lived in one unit of the building, alongside the four tourists in another unit.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the explosion was likely caused by a significant gas leak, as there had been reports of a gas odor in the area prior to the incident, according to Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
The explosion not only leveled the building but also caused damage to nearby residences, businesses, and vehicles, sending debris flying as far as three blocks away. Visuals from the scene highlighted the extent of the destruction, with mangled metal, broken tiles, and scattered personal belongings marking the aftermath.
In neighboring structures, two women were reported injured. A resident indicated that all individuals rescued from the nearby buildings were also tourists.
Community facilities, including a local church, experienced damage, prompting plans for Sunday services to be held outdoors to accommodate the situation.
Ongoing investigations are focused on the underlying causes of the explosion while emergency services continue to assist those impacted by this tragic event.
