Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has shared his congratulations with squash player Abhay Singh for winning a silver medal in the men’s singles event at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. In acknowledgment of his remarkable achievement, the Chief Minister also declared a cash reward of ₹50 lakh for the young athlete.
Abhay, who made it to the finals, went up against Malaysia’s defending champion Ng Eain Yow in the gold medal match on Sunday. Despite his efforts, the Indian player, who was seeded second, lost the match with scores of 9-11, 5-11, and 5-11, earning himself a well-deserved silver. With this victory, Abhay has become only the second Indian man to win a singles silver medal at the Asian Games, following Saurav Ghosal.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate squash player Abhay Singh for bringing pride to both Tamil Nadu and India with his silver medal victory at the 20th Asian Games in Japan,” said CM Vijay. He further emphasized that the cash incentive of ₹50 lakh is a reward for Abhay’s exceptional accomplishment.
“This win will inspire young athletes in Tamil Nadu. I wish him ongoing success and hope he achieves many more victories, adding to the glory of our state and country,” added the Chief Minister.
### Other Rewards from CM Vijay at the Asian Games 2026
Abhay Singh is not the only athlete from Tamil Nadu to receive recognition during the ongoing Asian Games. Earlier, CM Vijay awarded ₹75 lakh to young cricketer G. Kamalini after she played a significant role in India’s women’s T20 team that clinched the gold medal in Japan.
India triumphed over Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final, with standout performances from Smriti Mandhana, who scored 79 runs, and Richa Ghosh, who contributed an unbeaten 49 runs. Kamalini, a wicketkeeper-batter from Madurai, was part of this victorious team.
Furthermore, CM Vijay announced ₹50 lakh each for athletes Vithya Ramraj and Vishal T.K. after their silver medal win in the mixed 4x400m relay, where the Indian team finished with a time of 3:14.46, just behind Bahrain, which set a new Games record.
The Chief Minister also recognized squash players Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar with ₹30 lakh each after they secured bronze in the mixed doubles, adding to India’s medal tally in squash.
With the announcement of Abhay’s cash reward, CM Vijay has shown his support for athletes from various sports, underlining the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to honoring those who help bring medals to the nation.
