Mixed Feelings Ahead of India’s Friendly Match against Panama
As the sun set over the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, the usual electric atmosphere associated with Indian football was noticeably absent. A day before the national team faced Panama, fans and jersey sellers greeted the occasion with a surprising lack of enthusiasm.
This matchup marks India’s first return to Bengaluru since their victory at the SAFF Championship earlier this year. However, with the buzz replaced by concerns over ticket prices and the relevance of high-profile friendlies, the excitement in the city seems muted. Former India captain, Bhaichung Bhutia, even suggested a boycott of the upcoming Brazil friendly, adding to the growing conversation about the state of football in India.
Outside the stadium, Girish, the lone vendor selling India jerseys, expressed his disappointment. “There’s not much buzz today; it doesn’t feel like a major game is happening tomorrow. I’m even thinking of heading straight to Thiruvananthapuram for the ODI series instead,” he said, hinting at the lack of interest from fans.
Fans Grapple with High Ticket Prices
Nearby, Johnathan Murray, a student and Bengaluru FC supporter, found a different way to engage with the team by sneaking out of college to watch their training session instead of attending the match itself. “I wish I could go, but the lowest ticket is around Rs 850, which is tough for us. We’re used to paying much less for club games,” he explained. His friends also considered attending the match but ultimately decided against it due to the high costs.
Ticket prices have become a hot topic among supporters. The range starts from around Rs 849 and climbs higher, significantly more than what many fans typically pay for local club matches. Johnathan added, “Even my friends who wanted to come feel disheartened about it and are now moving on.”
Although players like Akash Mishra have called on fans to support the team, responses on social media have focused more on ticket prices than on enthusiasm for the match.
Lack of Promotional Efforts
Another issue contributing to the low turnout is the lack of visibility for the match. Though the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has shared information about the friendly on social media, it has not reached a broad audience. During a stroll through Bengaluru, there were hardly any signs or advertisements promoting the game, making it easy for many to overlook the event.
For a match featuring a World Cup-bound team, there was a missed chance to capture the city’s attention. Many casual football fans may not even know the match is happening unless they come across promotional material.
Looking Forward to the Match
On the pitch, India faces a tough challenge against the 44th-ranked Panama, who will compete in the upcoming World Cup. This presents a vital opportunity for Khalid Jamil’s squad to gauge where they stand against high-caliber opponents. Currently ranked 138th, India has yet to qualify for the men’s World Cup, making these encounters essential for growth.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, a seasoned player, emphasized the importance of every match, saying, “Each game is special because we play for our country, and we all want to win.” Coach Jamil also stressed the need for a balanced approach, understanding that a mix of defense and attack will be necessary against a stronger team.
Ultimately, while discussions about ticket prices, support, and promotion continue, the players will have 90 minutes to create an unforgettable experience for fans at Kanteerava.
