Amitabh Bachchan’s recent rise in wealth, according to the latest Hurun India Rich List, may not seem like a setback at first. His net worth has indeed increased, but when we look closely, we can see that while he is still getting richer, he is not doing so as quickly as some of his peers.
Last year, the Hurun list estimated Amitabh Bachchan and his family to have a wealth of ₹1,600 crore, ranking him fourth among Bollywood’s richest. In comparison, Karan Johar was fifth with an estimated ₹1,400 crore, trailing Bachchan by ₹200 crore.
This year, Bachchan’s net worth has risen to ₹1,630 crore—a modest increase of ₹30 crore, or about 1.9%. While this still represents growth, the pace of increase highlights a more significant story when we look at Karan Johar’s figures.
Karan Johar has seen a significant leap in his wealth, jumping from ₹1,400 crore to ₹1,880 crore—a remarkable rise of ₹480 crore, more than 34%. This not only narrows the gap between him and Bachchan but also puts him ahead by ₹250 crore, moving Johar from fifth to fourth place while Bachchan slips to fifth.
This scenario reflects that Bachchan’s wealth, while still larger than last year’s, is growing at a slower rate compared to other notable figures in the entertainment industry. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla have also seen their fortunes increase significantly during this period. Johar’s figures were boosted by monetizing part of his share in Dharma Productions.
Bachchan’s financial status and growth demonstrate the long-term success that comes from a career and wealth built over decades. Unlike his contemporaries, there hasn’t been a single substantial transaction that has driven his numbers up drastically this year.
To put it simply, while Amitabh Bachchan has seen his wealth increase by ₹30 crore, Karan Johar’s much larger growth of ₹480 crore illustrates that, over the past year, Johar’s financial success has outpaced that of the Big B.
