Netflix has recently shared the first look of its new family drama series, “Unaccustomed Earth,” featuring Freida Pinto and Siddharth in leading roles. This highly anticipated show, inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed collection of short stories, is set to debut on December 17, 2026.
The series has been adapted by Madhuri Shekar, who is also the showrunner and writer. “Unaccustomed Earth” delves into the lives of the Indian American community, exploring their complex relationships, family expectations, and the feelings of loss and belonging that span generations.
In her role as Parul Chaudhury, Freida Pinto plays a devoted wife and mother whose world is turned upside down when she receives a cancer diagnosis. Parul has already made many sacrifices throughout her life, including forgoing her first love to honor her father’s wishes. After her diagnosis, she relocates with her family from India to Cambridge, Massachusetts—a place she had previously considered home. This move sparks a reflection on her past choices and opens doors to paths she had once set aside.
Siddharth portrays Amit, while the cast also includes Indraneil Sengupta as Jai, Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig as Hema, and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab.
“Unaccustomed Earth” draws heavily from Lahiri’s collection, which dives into the intricacies of Indian American families and their struggles with identity, culture, and belonging. The story unfolds in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, highlighting themes of love, personal decisions, and the challenges of navigating life between two cultures.
Madhuri Shekar is leading the series as both showrunner and writer, with notable executive producers including John Wells, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Nisha Ganatra. Ritesh Batra will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the series.
Other cast members include Ishita Bansal as Divya, Meera Simham as Swati, Ravi Kapoor as Vishal, Swayam Bhatia as Sudha, and Palomi Ghosh as Anjali. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, “Unaccustomed Earth” will be available exclusively on Netflix starting December 17, 2026.
