In Odisha’s Balasore district, rangers have made a surprising discovery in the Ranakatha reserve forest: five young orangutans, each around one and a half years old, were found abandoned. Authorities have stepped in, providing care for these endangered animals at a local zoo, while Indonesia has formally asked for their return. Meanwhile, police are launching an investigation into how these primates ended up so far from their natural habitat.
### Orangutans: A Critical Endangered Species
Orangutans are critically endangered and are typically found only on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, which are situated in Southeast Asia. The journey to Odisha is an astonishing one, measuring over 2,000 kilometers by sea and about 7,000 kilometers over land. Investigators are currently working to determine how the infants arrived in India.
Sumant Bindumadhav from Humane World for Animals India noted that this incident sheds light on the extensive illegal trade in exotic animals. According to a report from June 2026, there has been a marked rise in the number of exotic animal seizures, reflecting a surge in wildlife trafficking. The report estimates that the exotic pet market in India was worth $42.6 million in 2024.
### Rising Demand for Exotic Pets
The same report highlights the increasing illegal transport of species like orangutans and gibbons to India from Southeast Asia. A confidential source from India’s Wildlife Crime Control Bureau mentioned that many social media influencers promote the idea of keeping such exotic animals as pets, driving a demand among affluent individuals.
Official statistics reveal that by February 2021, over 40,000 people had registered exotic animals voluntarily. However, experts believe that this number does not fully represent the total population of privately owned exotic pets. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) India recorded a total of 56 seizures involving around 4,000 exotic animals in 2022.
Experts indicate that the border between northeastern India and Myanmar is one of the main routes for smuggling these animals. Jimmy Bora, a member of the conservation organization Aaranyak, pointed out that seizure data only provides a glimpse into the vast illegal trade in exotic wildlife.
