Chelsea FC Welcomes New Ownership After Transition from Todd Boehly
Chelsea Football Club has officially changed hands, as Todd Boehly has sold his stake to Clearlake Capital, concluding a four-year period where he served as the club’s chairman. With this transition, Clearlake Capital now takes full control of the Premier League team.
The club announced the ownership change on Wednesday, confirming that Boehly, along with co-owner Mark Walter, has sold their shares to Clearlake. In his statement following the announcement, Boehly expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Chelsea and thanked everyone involved in the club’s journey.
“It has been a privilege to serve as chairman of Chelsea,” Boehly stated. “I appreciate all those who helped shape a bright future for the club, including the Premier League, coaches, players, dedicated staff, and loyal fans.”
He also acknowledged his collaboration with Clearlake and emphasized their joint efforts in making decisions and investments aimed at ensuring both immediate and long-term success for Chelsea. “I’m confident that under Clearlake’s leadership, Chelsea is set for continued success,” he added.
Previously, Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss each held a 12.8% share in Chelsea, while Clearlake owned 61.5%. The recent transactions have established Clearlake as the sole owner of the club. Chelsea has reassured fans that there will be no changes in the club’s day-to-day operations or its strategic direction.
Meet Chelsea’s New Owners
Clearlake Capital is a private equity firm from the United States, founded by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano. They became the majority owners of Chelsea when they joined a consortium to purchase the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Eghbali and Feliciano recognized Boehly as a vital partner during their collaboration and thanked him for his service as chairman. “Boehly will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family,” they remarked, stating that their priority will continue to be investing in the club’s facilities, sporting achievements, and player development.
A New Chapter for Chelsea
Boehly emerged as Chelsea’s prominent figure following the club’s £2.3 billion takeover in 2022 and played a significant role in a substantial investment period in the transfer market. Over his time as chairman, the club spent over £1 billion on new players, and they focused on recruiting young talent with long-term contracts.
Under the new ownership, Chelsea’s best finish in the Premier League came in the 2024-25 season, where they secured fourth place and celebrated victories in the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. However, they faced challenges last season, finishing 10th and subsequently hiring Xabi Alonso as their manager.
The club is also exploring options for Stamford Bridge, considering renovations or possibly relocating to a new stadium. Despite Boehly’s exit, Chelsea has confirmed that the shift in ownership will not change their operational practices or strategic planning for the immediate future.
