As the United States remembers the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the pain of loss still hangs heavily in the air. David Ferrugio, a podcaster and author of the book “You’re Not Dead Yet,” recently shared his journey of grief as he reflects on the 25 years since that fateful day. As a child of just 12, Ferrugio lost his father, David Frances Ferrugio, who worked in the World Trade Center during the attacks.

Ferrugio, who grew up in New Jersey, vividly recalls watching the towers fall on television—a moment that forever altered his life. “It was a turning point. I was one person on September 11, and then everything changed on September 12,” he said. This shift in perspective motivated him to delve into the world of grief and storytelling.

Throughout the years, Ferrugio learned the power of sharing personal stories about loss. On his “DEAD Talks” podcast, he invites guests to open up about their encounters with death and the impact it has had on their lives. “Once I started expressing myself, I realized how important it is to share my feelings and experiences,” he explained.

Ferrugio emphasizes several important lessons he has learned about navigating grief:

1. Embrace the Uncomfortable
Speaking about grief can be tough, even many years later. Ferrugio believes that talking openly about painful subjects is a necessary part of healing. He has seen how sharing stories can not only provide relief but also connect people facing similar struggles.

2. Shift Your Perspective
Over the past 25 years, Ferrugio has worked hard to improve his mental health. He encourages looking at life and death as two sides of the same coin. “Understanding that pain is part of life has helped me appreciate moments of joy even more,” he stated.

3. Remember to Breathe
When feeling overwhelmed, Ferrugio finds it helpful to simply breathe and allow himself to experience his emotions. He advocates that deep breathing can be quite beneficial, as well as engaging in exercise and taking time outdoors to destress.

4. Seek Joy Amidst Sadness
Ferrugio believes it’s crucial to allow yourself to feel happiness, even during difficult times. “Take a moment for joy, even if it’s just for a few seconds,” he advises, highlighting the contrast between joy and sorrow.

Reflecting on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Ferrugio acknowledges that the grief of losing his father still lingers. Yet he encourages others who share this experience to recognize their resilience. “Remember how far you’ve come and that you continue to move forward,” he said. “You’re here, and that’s a testament to your strength.”

As the country reflects on this significant moment, Ferrugio’s message serves as a beacon of hope and healing for anyone grappling with grief and loss.
