NFL Teams and Players Embrace Recovery Technology for Enhanced Performance

As the NFL season kicks off, recovery technology is becoming a crucial part of how teams and players maximize their performance on the field. This growing trend sees a variety of companies offering everything from compression gear and massage devices to high-tech wearables and hydration solutions.

Recovery is no longer just a post-game focus; players now integrate it into their daily routines, including training and preparation. This holistic approach emphasizes sleep health, physical workload management, and overall player wellness.

Recent reports indicate that every NFL team has placed orders with companies like Hyperice for recovery products over the last four years. Since 2017, Whoop has collaborated with the NFL Players Association on player recovery and biometrics, and Sleep Number notes that 83% of eligible players in its program have acquired their smart beds.

Players’ Personal Insights on Recovery

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow shared that his understanding of recovery has evolved significantly throughout his career. He stated, “Recovery involves more than just what happens right before or after a workout. I’m now more mindful of how my body feels every day, focusing on actions that ensure I perform at my best.”

Burrow adjusts his recovery tactics based on the football calendar. He aims for consistency during the season to prepare week by week, while the offseason allows him to concentrate on building strength and recovery, incorporating products like Bodyarmor Fit into his routine for hydration and caffeine.

Similarly, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen utilizes recovery tools throughout his training. He has been a fan of Therabody products since his rookie season, noting, “Recovery starts long before the game begins.” He uses Therabody’s devices before practices and games and has also found ways to utilize them during gameplay for quick relief.

Emerging Technology in NFL Locker Rooms

The integration of recovery technology in NFL locker rooms has become nearly standard. Hyperice reports that each team has ordered its products, with popular items including massage guns and compression systems. New innovations are also being introduced, with teams like the Seattle Seahawks testing Nike x Hyperice Hyperslides, while star players such as Patrick Mahomes and Christian McCaffrey take on ambassador roles for different recovery brands.

Ammortal, which creates a full-body recovery chamber, is now used by 12 NFL teams and was instrumental in helping players like Matthew Stafford with their recovery processes.

Further, Sleep Number continues to offer its smart beds to players through an official partnership with the NFL. This relationship, which includes sleep education initiatives, has seen widespread use, with many players benefiting from improved sleep quality.

Wearables Empower Athletes with Recovery Data

Technological wearables also play a significant role in this recovery movement. Whoop, a company valued at $10.1 billion, became the NFLPA’s official recovery wearable in 2017, allowing players to access valuable insights about their health and recovery metrics. By 2020, all active NFL players had access to Whoop’s tracking capabilities, which offer data on heart rates, sleep patterns, and recovery status.

Player-Driven Adoption of Recovery Tools

Emerging brands are making headway as well, with companies like Rally gaining traction. Athletes from more than seven NFL teams are already using their massage devices. Current players are increasingly deciding to buy these products, showing a shift toward personal investment in recovery.

Significance of NFL Partnerships for Recovery Brands

For many recovery brands, having elite athletes endorse their products serves as validation and boosts their appeal to a wider market. Hyperice’s CEO noted that professional sports account for a small fraction of its overall revenue, but they play a vital role in product development and visibility. This trend underscores the importance of athletes not only using recovery tools but also influencing their design and improvement to benefit all consumers.

As the NFL season unfolds, the importance of recovery technology in enhancing player performance is clearer than ever. With players prioritizing their health, it’s likely that this trend will continue to grow both on and off the field.
