As modern health trends like “biohacking,” which includes practices such as using peptides, taking cold plunges, and utilizing high-tech wearables, gain traction, some experts are raising important questions about their real impact on longevity. While many advocates believe these methods can significantly extend human lifespan, others argue it’s more crucial to enhance the quality of life during the years we have.
Dr. Annu Navani, the chief medical officer at Le Reve Wellness in San Jose, California, where she oversees innovative programs in regenerative and longevity medicine, emphasizes that the idea of living well past 120 or 130 years is misleading. “Yes, we’re seeing progress in extending lifespan somewhat,” she stated, “but it would be unrealistic to promise that everyone will reach such old ages.”
Instead of simply adding years to life, Dr. Navani insists that we should aim to enrich the quality of those years. “Longevity medicine focuses on enhancing life during those years,” she explained.
Affordable Habits for a Longer Life
Living a long life doesn’t have to come with high costs or elaborate treatments. According to Dr. Navani, simple daily habits can create a solid foundation for improved health and longevity, many of which won’t break the bank.
Here are four key habits recommended for enhancing longevity:
1. Prioritize Good Sleep
Dr. Navani believes that sleep is often undervalued in discussions about health. “Studies suggest that getting around seven hours of sleep can lead to better overall health and a longer life,” she noted. To improve sleep, she advises eating dinner a few hours before bed, avoiding stimulating activities like screen time, and incorporating relaxing practices such as meditation or journaling.
2. Effectively Manage Stress
Stress management is another vital aspect of maintaining good health. It can be achieved through a mix of physical activities, proper sleep, relaxation techniques, nutritious eating, and maintaining social connections. Dr. Navani starts her day with 20 minutes of meditation and gratitude to reduce stress.
3. Follow a Nutritious Diet
Dr. Navani emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while minimizing added sugars and unhealthy fats can promote health and longevity. It’s crucial to tailor these dietary habits to individual health needs and personal preferences.
4. Stay Active with Regular Exercise
The CDC recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise weekly, alongside strength training exercises on two days. For those aged 50 and older, Dr. Navani suggests high-intensity resistance training, which significantly boosts bone and muscle health.
She highlights VO₂ max—a measure of how efficiently our heart and lungs work during exercise—stating, “it’s an important indicator of overall health and longevity.”
Starting Each Day Right
Dr. Navani shares her simple morning routine to set a positive tone for the day. She suggests breaking the first hour into three 20-minute segments:
- The first 20 minutes involve meditation and gratitude to help reduce stress.
- The second 20 minutes are for physical activities, including stretching and resistance training.
- The final 20 minutes are dedicated to reading something stimulating or educational.
She recommends avoiding phone distractions first thing in the morning, suggesting it’s better to engage with intellectually enriching materials.
Dr. Navani also stresses that it’s never too late to improve one’s health. Many of her patients start their wellness journeys well into their 50s and 60s, proving that taking steps toward a healthier life can always begin today.
