Inquiry Launched into ‘Touch Healing’ Claims in Udupi
The health department in Udupi has initiated an investigation following claims on social media that certain diseases can be treated through a practice known as ‘touch healing.’ Authorities have warned that legal consequences may follow if these allegations are validated.
Dr. Basavaraj Hubballi, the district health officer (DHO), has instructed the taluk health officer (THO) to look into the matter, take appropriate action if necessary, and report back within a week.
The complaint was submitted by Deepu Shettigar, a social worker and influencer from Mangaluru, against an individual from Shankarpura, who allegedly posted these claims on Facebook. Shettigar argued that the person in question is making these assertions without holding any medical qualifications or proper certification.
In the order, Dr. Hubballi noted, “The individual is falsely stating on Facebook that illnesses can be cured through touch or physical interaction. The complainant emphasizes that these claims lack any medical foundation or scientific backing, which could mislead the public.”
The DHO has mandated the THO to carry out the investigation through a designated team, as outlined in Section 21(1) of the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (Amendment) Act, and report the findings within a week.
Dr. Basavaraj stated that the directive was officially issued on September 2. “The individual may have made misleading claims, and we are currently awaiting the findings of the inquiry. The officer will also conduct an on-site assessment and verify the person’s credentials. If the accusations are confirmed, the health department will proceed with actions, including potentially filing a First Information Report (FIR) with the police,” he explained.
