American Hopes Diminish at US Open as Keys and Anisimova Exit; Andreeva Advances

American tennis fans faced disappointment on Saturday at the US Open, as Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova were both eliminated in the third round. In contrast, fifth seed Mirra Andreeva continued her impressive run, reaching the fourth round in New York for the first time.

Madison Keys, seeded 22nd, started strong against China’s Zheng Qinwen, cruising through the first set. However, Zheng, a former world No. 4 and Olympic champion, staged a remarkable comeback, eventually winning 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5. Keys was just five points away from victory in the final set, leading 5-0 and holding a match point, yet Zheng’s determination led her to win seven consecutive games and pull off a stunning upset. Earlier in the tournament, Keys had survived a nail-biting match against Anna Bondar, but this time, she couldn’t find the same magic.

Last year’s US Open runner-up, Amanda Anisimova, experienced a more straightforward loss. The 10th seed fell to the 24th seed, Austria’s Anastasia Potapova, with a score of 6-2, 7-5. Anisimova struggled with her game, committing 46 unforced errors, while Potapova proved to be a tough opponent, successfully saving 13 of 16 break points.

Andreeva Shines in New York

On a brighter note for fans, Mirra Andreeva kept up her strong performance. The 19-year-old managed to maintain her composure, defeating Czech teenager Nikola Bartunkova 6-2, 7-6(5) to make it to the Round of 16 for the first time. Andreeva showcased her skills, controlling the pace of the match with her agility and precise shots. Although Bartunkova made the second set more challenging, Andreeva kept her focus during the tiebreak to seal her victory.

Andreeva’s journey at the US Open started impressively with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Janice Tjen, where she displayed aggressive play and won 17 points in a row at one point. She followed this performance with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory against Eva Lys before facing Bartunkova.

Next up for Andreeva is a match against 24th seed Anastasia Potapova, who has already defeated Anisimova and will present a different kind of challenge, bringing both power and confidence from her recent victory.

As the tournament progresses, fans will be keen to see how the remaining American players fare and whether Andreeva can continue her remarkable journey.
