In the latest action at the US Open, two former champions, Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka, made it through the second round with impressive performances. Swiatek won her match in straight sets, while Osaka had a little more trouble before securing her victory.
Swiatek, who is ranked eighth in the world, faced Nadia Podoroska, a rematch of their semi-final clash from six years ago. The match took place on the Grandstand court, where Swiatek displayed great composure and won 6-3, 6-2. She was particularly effective on her first serve, hitting 79% of them successfully and winning 78% of those points. Podoroska had a brief opportunity to break Swiatek’s serve late in the first set, but Swiatek saved all three break points and closed out the set after Podoroska sent a forehand wide. The second set saw Swiatek dominate, quickly racing to a 5-1 lead before finishing the match with a beautiful crosscourt backhand.
In a more challenging match, Naomi Osaka faced Katerina Siniakova. After taking a promising lead of 5-3 in the second set, Osaka experienced a hiccup and lost four games in a row, allowing Siniakova to level the match. However, Osaka quickly regained her focus and cruised through the deciding set 6-1 without losing her serve. This victory marks Osaka’s eighth trip to the third round at the US Open in ten attempts, and it also signifies her success in reaching the third round at all four Grand Slam events this season for only the second time in her career.
Next up, Osaka will compete against 20th seed Elise Mertens, who triumphed over Maria Timofeeva in straight sets. The excitement continues as both players look to advance further in the tournament.
