Asha Sharma has been leading Xbox as the Executive Vice President and CEO for nearly six months now, taking over from Phil Spencer. Recently, she sat down with the BBC at Gamescom to discuss various topics concerning Xbox, including price hikes, job cuts, and the current state of gaming costs.
When asked about the obstacles she has encountered since assuming her role, Sharma pointed out that there isn’t just one issue to tackle. She acknowledged that while there are many exciting advancements in this console generation, numerous challenges persist. Among these are the ongoing shortage of key components like RAM and other computer parts, the world’s recovery during and after 2020, and an influx of younger players entering the gaming scene alongside emerging technologies.
Sharma emphasized the need for the gaming industry to focus on “innovation in affordability and efficiency.” When discussing artificial intelligence, she noted that gaming serves as a testing ground for graphics processing units (GPUs) and mentioned the positive potential of this technology across other fields.
Despite her insight into technological growth, some gamers are frustrated by the rising prices of hardware driven by AI demand. A recent article from ABC News highlighted that the costs and shortages of computer components have surged due to this demand. A chairman at SK Hynix, one of the leading manufacturers of DRAM, warned that the shortage could extend into 2030.
Sharma is aware of the transformative impact of AI but also recognizes the challenges in making gaming more affordable. Although Xbox is trying to help by offering payment options like Afterpay, the difficulties in obtaining necessary parts for console production cannot be overlooked. For example, Valve recently postponed the launch of its Steam Machine, revealing a price tag of AUD 1,609—significantly higher than earlier estimates.
Overall, Sharma’s interview sheds light on her perspective and Xbox’s future direction. Many viewers have responded positively to her remarks, appreciating her understanding of the challenges facing the company. The interviewer, Laura Cress, posed several tough questions, encouraging a candid discussion. As the gaming community continues to navigate the complexities of rising hardware costs, it remains to be seen how these issues will evolve in the coming years.
