AIMPLB to Launch Campaign for Constitutional and Religious Rights

NEW DELHI: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is set to begin a nationwide movement on September 17 aimed at promoting the protection of the Constitution, Sharia, and the rights and dignity of all citizens. This campaign will kick off at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and will focus on engaging people from various faiths over the next three months.

In their announcement, the AIMPLB detailed plans to submit a charter of demands to President Droupadi Murmu through governors in each state. The charter aims to address several key issues, including the elimination of hate crimes, prevention of unlawful property demolitions, and the protection of Waqf properties and places of worship. Additionally, it calls for equal enforcement of the law across all communities.

As part of the campaign, the Board will also publish a ‘White Paper’ capturing incidents of discrimination against Muslims, violations of constitutional and human rights, and will release a comprehensive declaration regarding lynching issues. The AIMPLB has expressed concerns that vulnerable groups, particularly Muslims, have experienced increasing discrimination in recent years.

The board highlighted several pressing issues, such as unauthorized demolitions and challenges to Muslim Personal Law posed by proposals for a Uniform Civil Code. These matters, they argue, threaten both the Constitution and social unity in the country.

Furthermore, in light of recent remarks made by Kerala’s grand mufti, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, suggesting that women should stay indoors to uphold their dignity as per Islamic teachings, AIMPLB spokesperson SQR Ilyas expressed objections. He emphasized that Islam does not mandate such confinement for women, labeling Ahmad’s interpretation as “not correct.”

Ilyas also noted that AIMPLB includes nearly 30 women members and affirmed the board’s commitment to empowering Muslim women, aligning with Islamic principles aimed at fostering their growth and progress.
