Diverse Indian Sarees Shine at Times Square Event

New York, NY – Times Square was alive with color and culture as members of the Indian diaspora proudly displayed the beauty of Indian sarees at a special event. The occasion celebrated the elegance and rich heritage of this traditional garment, showcasing a variety of styles from different regions of India.

The event, known as ‘Saree Goes Global,’ was organized by Uma Global, a philanthropic organization based in New York. Women and girls paraded in stunning sarees, featuring intricate embroidery and designs. They proudly showcased everything from Assamese weaves to Banarasi silk and Kanjeevaram sarees, highlighting the incredible diversity of this nine-yard attire.

Participants dressed in vibrant sarees adorned with unique embellishments gathered in Times Square, waving national flags and sharing joyful moments. They danced, took pictures, and exchanged stories about their beloved garments and cultural significance.

In a message delivered at the event, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of celebrating women who contribute positively to communities while honoring their heritage. She praised Uma Global for supporting women and minorities through various initiatives, fostering inclusion and mentorship in business.

Rajlakshmi Appasaheb Kadam from the Consulate General of India in New York highlighted the saree’s deep-rooted connection to Indian traditions and the craftsmanship of local artisans. She described the saree as a timeless piece that not only pays tribute to heritage but also embraces modern fashion while promoting sustainable practices.

The saree’s journey has evolved from its ancient origins to becoming a popular choice for women in different settings, from weddings to professional environments. Kadam noted that the saree is a sustainable option that carries the stories of generations before us.

The event also honored several inspiring women for their achievements. Among them were Shaila Rizvi, an interior designer known for her work in the acclaimed restaurant Bungalow, and Mysha Rizvi, a beloved guest relations manager. Their contributions to their fields were celebrated, showcasing the impact women have in diverse professional spaces.

Dr. Rita Kakati-Shah, President of Uma Global, shared her excitement about the celebration, noting that it was heartwarming to see the diversity of Indian textiles being embraced not just by women, but also by men in traditional attire. She emphasized that ‘Saree Goes Global’ represents more than just fashion; it is a celebration of confidence, heritage, and community.

Dilip Chauhan from the New York City Mayor’s Office acknowledged the importance of diversity in strengthening the city’s economy, referencing Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s vision for inclusive opportunities.

The cultural festivities included music, dance, and a vibrant ramp walk showcasing sarees from all over India. Performances from Dance X Studio and a lively flash dance in Times Square added to the excitement, inviting both participants and passersby to join in the celebration.

The event concluded with the signature Saree Walkathon, uniting families and supporters in a beautiful display of cultural pride. Dr. Dipti Jain, founder of the Saree Goes Global initiative in the UK, stated that sarees provide a unique way to honor shared heritage and build a sense of belonging.

Uma Global continues to empower youth and women through educational and cross-cultural initiatives, ensuring that the spirit of the saree—and the pride it embodies—remains strong in the community.
