Xiaomi Breaks Ground with New AI Mobile Chip to Compete Against Qualcomm and MediaTek | Tech News

Xiaomi Unveils New Mobile Processor, Upping Competition with Qualcomm and MediaTek

Xiaomi Corp. has officially introduced its own mobile processor, marking a significant move that challenges industry giants Qualcomm Inc. and MediaTek Inc., who have been supplying essential components for Xiaomi devices for many years.

The new chip, named Xring O3, focuses on enhancing Xiaomi’s in-house semiconductor design. According to a recent post on Weibo, the platform for social media in China, this processor promises improved energy efficiency, superior image processing abilities, and advanced artificial intelligence features.

This cutting-edge processor is manufactured using a 3-nanometer fabrication process, as stated by Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun. This technology is on par with the latest chips from Apple Inc., specifically the A19 Pro, and is a step ahead of the in-house designs offered by Huawei Technologies Co. For the production of these chips, Xiaomi has partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., as reported by Reuters.

In a recent analysis, Bloomberg Intelligence remarked that while Xiaomi’s Xring O3 remains at the 3-nanometer level, rival companies are progressing to 2nm technology. This indicates that Xiaomi is prioritizing architectural enhancements and feature improvements to differentiate its products in the market. The restructured design, combined with quicker memory and more robust on-device AI, is expected to elevate the appeal of Xiaomi’s flagship phones. However, the limited volume of the new chips suggests the company will still rely significantly on Qualcomm and MediaTek for its supply chain.

Historically, Qualcomm and MediaTek have been the primary suppliers of processors for Xiaomi. The company, known for not only its smartphones but also its electric vehicles, is striving to decrease its dependence on foreign chips by leveraging years of research and development in semiconductors. Developing an in-house chip for its top products is anticipated to enhance Xiaomi’s bargaining power with suppliers while also attracting consumers in an increasingly competitive market.

In contrast, Huawei has successfully transitioned to using its own Kirin processors for premium smartphone models after facing restrictions from the U.S. that cut it off from essential global suppliers like Qualcomm. Unlike Huawei, Xiaomi is not currently facing similar sanctions, allowing it to continue engaging with international suppliers.

Once the leading smartphone manufacturer in China, Xiaomi is currently facing challenges with sluggish demand for both its smartphones and electric vehicles, as overall consumer spending shows little growth. Recent research from Counterpoint indicates that Xiaomi experienced the most significant decline in smartphone shipments among major manufacturers in the last quarter. Additionally, there are concerns among investors that aggressive pricing strategies for its new electric vehicles could further impact profit margins.
