IMA Calls for Reassessment of Sunny Deol’s Suryaa Amid Concerns About Depicting Doctors and Hospital Violence

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has voiced its concerns about the promotional material for Sunny Deol’s upcoming movie, Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak. The association points out that the film’s representation of the medical field may harm the reputation of doctors and healthcare staff. In a formal statement, the IMA expressed worries about how themes of corruption and violence against medical professionals might shape public views negatively.

The IMA highlighted four main issues. First, they criticized the tendency to generalize wrongdoings within the entire medical community. They are particularly concerned about showcasing physical violence against healthcare providers, which could portray such actions as acceptable. The association emphasized, “The depiction risks suggesting that corruption and unethical behavior are widespread in the medical field. While misconduct should be dealt with, the actions of a few should not tarnish the reputation of many honest doctors.”

The IMA also noted that displaying physical assaults on doctors and nurses, especially when depicted as noble or justified, could contribute to normalizing violence in healthcare settings. This is troubling, they argued, because medical workers already face significant safety risks in their jobs. “Content that glorifies violence against healthcare professionals may only worsen these dangers,” the IMA stated.

Moreover, the organization raised concerns about how these portrayals might foster distrust among the public toward doctors. They warned that negative representations could undermine the crucial trust between patients and healthcare providers.

While the IMA stands against unethical practices in medicine, they believe that the focus should be on addressing individual cases rather than allowing such incidents to reflect poorly on the profession as a whole. They have asked for a fair review of the film’s content, urging filmmakers to make necessary changes to mitigate these concerns. They even recommended considering a ban or other actions if deemed necessary.

Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak, directed by M. Padmakumar in his first Hindi film, is an official remake of the Malayalam crime thriller Joseph. The movie features Sunny Deol as a retired police officer delving into troubling issues of medical malpractice and corruption after a personal loss. Other cast members include Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Manish Wadhwa, and Jisshu Sengupta.

The film is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. The IMA’s objections have spotlighted important discussions about the portrayal of healthcare workers just before the film’s release.
