Healthcare leaders and local authorities gathered in Yonkers on Thursday to address the ongoing issues surrounding breastfeeding and to share helpful resources for new mothers. The event took place at the Westchester Community Health Center.
Experts highlighted the many benefits of breastfeeding, stating that it offers essential nutrients and antibodies that help shield babies from illnesses. However, they also recognized that some families face obstacles while trying to breastfeed.
Dr. Sherlita Amler, the Westchester County Health Department Commissioner, emphasized that breastfeeding is the best way to nourish a child. She also pointed out the significance of providing support to new mothers during this journey.
Local mother Cedrika Williams, who has four children, shared her experiences, revealing that each of her breastfeeding journeys was unique. She noted that one of the main challenges she encountered was issues with latching.
Officials underscored the importance of informing mothers that they do not have to face these challenges alone. Dr. James McDonald, from the New York State Department of Health, showcased the support offered through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. This program includes trained peer counselors who are available to provide helpful advice and encouragement.
Health care providers urged mothers to reach out for assistance whenever necessary, reminding them that community support services are readily available. Xiomara Castro, the site director at the Westchester Community Health Center in Yonkers, affirmed the commitment of healthcare providers to help families access necessary care and resources.
