BWF World Championships: Ayush Shetty Falls to Old Rival Alwi, Exits in Pre-Quarterfinals

Ayush Shetty’s Journey at BWF World Championships Ends in Disappointment

In a surprising turn of events, Ayush Shetty, currently ranked World No. 22, faced an early exit from the BWF World Championships. After an impressive victory over World No. 1 Shi Yuqi, expectations were high for Ayush at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. However, he fell short against his familiar opponent, Alwi Farhan, in the men’s singles Round of 16.

The atmosphere was electric as fans rallied behind Ayush, hoping for another memorable performance. Despite their support, Ayush couldn’t secure the win, ultimately losing the match with scores of 19-21 and 11-21 over the course of 45 minutes.

Ayush was aware of Alwi’s strengths, particularly his remarkable speed and strong attacking style. Unfortunately, in crucial moments, Ayush struggled to counter those advantages. Just a day before the match, he had mentioned how Alwi’s quick movements could be a challenge, and on this day, they proved to be just that.

Having recently triumphed against Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama, Ayush entered the match feeling relatively fresh. Despite a promising start, where he rallied back from a 14-18 deficit to take the lead at 19-18, he was unable to finish off the first game.

The match reflected a hesitant approach from Ayush. Although he had the skills to outplay Alwi, he seemed unsure on the court. Early on, he struggled to judge the court’s conditions, which led to mistakes in his lifts and gave Alwi opportunities to score with powerful smashes.

During the mid-game break, coach Sagar Chopda advised Ayush to work on his positioning, but the guidance did not lead to the necessary adjustments in his game. Alwi dominated the second game, leaving Ayush unable to find his rhythm as he struggled to keep up with the fast-paced game.

With Ayush’s defeat, India’s campaign in men’s singles has come to an end. Top shuttler Lakshya Sen had also faced an early elimination, losing to American player Garret Tan just the day before.

Now, Alwi Farhan stands as the only Indonesian player remaining in the men’s singles draw after Jonathan Christie was defeated earlier in the day, leaving the home crowd in dismay as their hopes for a longer run in the tournament dissolved.
