ICE Detains Indian-Origin Guitarist and His Green-Card Holding Grandmother in the U.S.

Detentions Highlight Immigration Enforcement Issues in the U.S.

Two individuals of Indian descent, a jazz guitarist and a grandmother with a green card, have been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in separate incidents that underscore the ongoing immigration crackdown during the Trump administration.

Pritesh Walia, a jazz guitarist originally from New Delhi, was taken into custody by ICE upon his return to Los Angeles earlier this month. Following his detention, he spent 14 days at the Adelanto ICE Processing Centre before being released on bond. Walia shared on social media that his immigration case remains unresolved, and details about his visa status and the reasons for his detention have not been disclosed.

In a separate case, Venkata Vasamsetty, who has been a legal permanent resident for nearly three decades, was detained during a routine check-in with ICE in North Carolina on August 11. Vasamsetty, a green card holder since 2013, was apprehended despite previously having dismissal of removal proceedings by an immigration judge.

Background checks reveal that Vasamsetty has lived in the U.S. for 27 years and works with special-needs students in her community. She is also a mother and grandmother to U.S. citizens. Her recent trip to India was to care for an ailing parent, and her return was delayed due to health issues, including contracting COVID-19. Her attorney argues that claims of her abandoning her residency should not apply in this case.

Under U.S. immigration laws, green card holders who spend over 180 days outside the country may face scrutiny regarding their residency intentions when they attempt to return. In Vasamsetty’s situation, her removal case had been dismissed by an immigration judge in May after the Department of Homeland Security failed to provide the required evidence.

Despite this, Vasamsetty continued to comply with scheduled ICE check-ins, only to face detention during her visit to the agency’s office. Following her arrest, her legal team filed a petition challenging her detention at the Irwin County Detention Centre, prompting a federal judge to request an explanation from immigration authorities regarding the basis of her custody.

These cases highlight the broader implications of the intensified immigration enforcement policies pursued by the Trump administration. Recent data reveals that over 27,800 Indian nationals faced detention by ICE from 2022 to 2025, reflecting growing concerns over the treatment of immigrants in the U.S.
