Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming film Ramayana is set to make waves in international cinema with its theatrical release in China. However, it will debut there under a new title. This follows the success of Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal, which charmed Chinese audiences nearly ten years ago, making Ramayana eager to tap into the world’s second-largest film market.
Rumor has it that the film will be known as “The Legend of Prince” in China, and Sony Pictures is slated to handle the distribution. In preparation for its release, the filmmakers are reportedly planning a promotional campaign. This may include a press event and a screening at the Pingyao International Film Festival on September 24, followed by a promotional tour during China’s Golden Week starting on October 1.
As for the release dates, Ramayana: Part 1 is set to hit international theaters on November 6, with a subsequent release in Indian cinemas on November 8, just in time for Diwali. Producer Namit Malhotra explained that the difference in dates is due to international film distribution norms, which typically prioritize Fridays. He mentioned that the Indian release is strategically timed for the festive period.
The film has already sparked considerable interest, although the trailer has received mixed feedback. While many viewers have praised its grand scale and action, others have expressed concerns about the quality of the special effects. Ranbir Kapoor responded to critics who claimed that the visuals appeared to be AI-generated, finding it amusing to see the rise of “CG critics” on social media. He emphasized the extensive effort contributed by the team and artists involved in the film’s production.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana aims to be a two-part retelling of the classic Indian epic. Ranbir Kapoor stars as Lord Rama, Yash plays Ravana, and Sai Pallavi portrays Sita. The cast also features names like Sunny Deol, Ravie Dubey, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, and Kunal Kapoor. The second part of the film is expected to be released during Diwali 2027.
