PM Modi Sets Bold Goals for India’s Banking and Pharmaceutical Sectors
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced exciting goals for India’s banking and pharmaceutical industries, aiming for at least one Indian bank to be ranked among the top five in the world and for Indian pharmaceutical companies to join the ranks of the five largest globally.
Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, Modi emphasized that India’s rising economic strength should lead to globally recognized firms in these key sectors. “Our banking industry is booming; it’s time for one of our banks to make it to the top five worldwide,” he stated.
He further urged that Indian pharmaceutical companies should work towards entering the top five in the global market, highlighting the importance of scale and competitiveness for success.
Aiming for Global Recognition
The Prime Minister’s statements are part of a broader initiative to develop Indian companies that can compete on a global level. He has set a target of having 50 Indian companies in the Fortune 500 list, stressing that India needs to think bigger as it seeks to enhance its presence in the global economy.
Modi noted that many countries are starting to appreciate Indian capabilities and pointed out that India has signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 40 nations as a key indicator of its growing international engagement.
This initiative aims to combine increased self-sufficiency domestically with a stronger international market presence.
Banking, Pharma, and New Horizons
Modi highlighted the prosperity of India’s banking sector and called for an even stronger global position. As for the pharmaceutical industry, he reiterated the need for Indian firms to break into the top tier of international companies, enhancing their scale and competitiveness in the process.
These goals are part of PM Modi’s broader “Shakti ki Sapt Dhara” framework, which outlines seven critical areas for India to strengthen over the next five to seven years. These areas include manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and innovation, infrastructure development, defense, the green and blue economy, and promoting India’s cultural influence.
From Local Strengths to Global Impact
Modi asserted that India must keep its markets open to the world, aiming for products of high quality that can compete internationally. He also called for Indian advancements in technology and digital solutions to reach every corner of the globe, highlighting the ambition to make Indian-made 6G technology available worldwide.
Furthermore, Modi pointed out the impressive growth of Indian manufacturing over the past 12 years, including a sevenfold increase in electronic manufacturing and a 33-fold increase in mobile phone production. Defense manufacturing has also seen substantial growth during this period.
The overarching goal, according to Modi, is to leverage India’s strengths in manufacturing, technology, finance, and human resources to foster globally competitive businesses.
A Vision for the Future
PM Modi expressed that India aims to accomplish in the next five to seven years what may have taken previous decades. His aspiration extends beyond merely boosting economic indicators to enhancing the global position of Indian companies in sectors like banking, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and technology.
