Study Reveals DNA Changes May Predict Blood Cancer Progression Early
Recent research shines a light on the potential of DNA testing to detect blood cancers like myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) before traditional tests can. This study, featured in the journal Cancer Discovery, involved 30 participants diagnosed with these types of blood cancers, which cause excessive blood cell production due to issues in the bone marrow.
The researchers monitored genetic shifts in the patients’ blood and bone marrow. They looked for these changes in relation to blood counts and the status of the disease—whether stable or progressing toward more severe conditions like myelofibrosis or acute leukemia.
Notably, patients whose conditions remained stable did not show significant genetic changes. This implies that a “quiet” MPN could be less likely to worsen over time, according to scientists from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the U.K.
In contrast, those whose health declined demonstrated DNA alterations years before standard blood tests revealed any issues. Some participants eventually developed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but their cancer didn’t progress uniformly. For some, the leukemia developed from mutations that accumulated in MPN cells, while others showed evidence of separate abnormal blood cell groups contributing to their condition.
Interestingly, the study also pointed out that hydroxyurea, a common drug used to manage blood counts in MPN patients, leaves a distinct pattern of DNA changes. However, there’s no indication that it triggers leukemia. A similar pattern was found with azacitidine, another medication for blood cancers.
Three individuals from the study who had a diagnosis of essential thrombocythemia—typically classified as a blood cancer—showed no genetic markers of cancer in their samples. This raises questions about whether some patients with such diagnoses may not require extensive cancer treatment.
While the study sample was small and the results show associations rather than definitive causes, experts view these findings as promising. Dr. Abhishek Chilkulwar, an oncologist, noted that many MPN patients can live with their conditions for decades.
These discoveries indicate that monitoring a patient’s DNA over time could offer early alerts about disease progression, potentially well before symptoms or routine tests catch on. This research may usher in a new era of precision medicine in blood cancer treatment, helping to predict risks and intervene earlier.
