The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) has officially kicked off preparations for its National Convention, AAPICON 2027, at an event held in Oak Brook, Illinois. This gathering marked the beginning of what officials describe as a significant moment in the history of AAPI.
Hundreds of physicians, healthcare leaders, elected officials, and community members attended the launch. Dr. Utpal Parikh, one of the convention’s co-chairs, welcomed everyone and highlighted the importance of working together to make AAPICON 2027 a great success. Dr. Meher Medavaram is currently serving as AAPI’s president, making her the 42nd leader of the organization since it was founded.
The event featured Dr. Radhika Chimata, who performed the national anthems of both the United States and India, representing the dual heritage of Indian-American physicians. During the event, Dr. Suresh Reddy, a past president of AAPI and a village trustee, shared reflections on AAPI’s history and acknowledged Oak Brook’s special distinction for having produced three national AAPI presidents.
Mayor Larry Herman of Oak Brook praised the contributions of Indian-American physicians in medicine and humanitarian efforts. He presented a proclamation recognizing AAPI as the largest ethnic medical organization in the country, representing over 100,000 medical professionals and students. He also honored Oak Brook as the home of AAPI’s international headquarters for over thirty years.
In her remarks, Dr. Medavaram provided her vision for AAPICON 2027, stating that it will be more than just an annual meeting. She expressed hopes for excellent collaboration, support for physician wellness, and a commitment to global health initiatives. She encouraged all physicians to act as ambassadors and mentors.
Dr. Umang Patel, the convention chair, committed to delivering an outstanding event, while AAPI Treasurer Dr. Sujeeth Punnam presented the organization’s goals for fundraising and national engagement ahead of the convention. Additionally, Dr. Dwarakanatha Reddy, the President of IMA Telangana State, invited physicians worldwide to participate in the upcoming Global Health Summit in India.
Former Oak Brook Mayor Dr. Gopal Lalmalani reflected on AAPI’s growth, including its name change to better represent its mission and the notable achievements during its history. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi acknowledged the success of the Indian-American community and encouraged greater civic participation among physicians.
As the evening drew to a close, past presidents of AAPI and other community leaders gathered for photographs to commemorate the launch of AAPICON 2027, looking forward to a successful and impactful convention.
