University of Kentucky Introduces New AI Major
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, assisting with everything from shopping lists to online queries. In response to this growing trend, colleges are evolving to meet the demands of the future workforce.
This fall, the University of Kentucky is welcoming its inaugural class of 33 students into its brand-new artificial intelligence major. Enrollment is expected to rise as more students look to prepare for careers in an AI-focused job market.
Brent Harrison, the director of the program, emphasizes that the degree is grounded in solid computer science principles. “This isn’t just about using AI tools like GPT. It’s about mastering programming first, then applying those skills to understand and develop AI,” he explained.
The degree requires 120 credit hours and includes classes on programming, machine learning, statistics, and ethics. While it shares similarities with computer science degrees, this program specifically gears students for current tech careers and allows them to adapt to new opportunities as AI evolves.
Harrison notes the appeal of this major for those interested in roles such as data analysts and data scientists. “Many employers will find that AI is a great tool to enhance productivity rather than replace workers,” he said, adding that companies are discovering innovative ways to integrate AI into their operations.
In addition to the AI major, the University of Kentucky also offers an AI certificate available to students from all fields, allowing anyone to enhance their skills in this vital area. Ethics play a crucial role in the curriculum, as Harrison points out.
“I make sure to emphasize ethics because, whenever you use AI, there’s a cost. Understanding that cost and weighing it against the expected outcomes is essential,” he stated.
This new focus on AI prepares students not just for today but also for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
