Covestro and BYD Join Forces to Pioneer Future EV Technologies

Covestro and BYD Join Forces for a Sustainable Future in Electric Mobility

Covestro, a leading materials manufacturer from Germany, has teamed up with BYD, a prominent Chinese electric vehicle and battery producer. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a long-term partnership aimed at developing innovative material solutions for new energy vehicles, battery systems, and energy storage technologies.

This agreement moves their relationship beyond just buying and selling; it focuses on deeper collaboration across the entire value chain. Together, they will work on joint research and development projects, explore new technologies, and investigate strategic investment opportunities. Their partnership will cover areas like electric vehicles (EVs), power batteries, public transportation systems, and residential energy storage.

This collaboration comes at a time when global interest in electric transportation is skyrocketing. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that currently, one in four vehicles sold worldwide is electric. This shift calls for lightweight, sustainable, and high-performing materials that can handle complex needs for heat management, structure, and efficiency.

As part of this partnership, Covestro will contribute specialized research capabilities, technical support, and early access to new material innovations. Meanwhile, BYD plans to involve Covestro in the early design stages of its projects and align their technological strategies.

In the automotive sector, Covestro intends to leverage its extensive experience with polycarbonate and polyurethane materials. These materials will be used for vehicle lighting, interior and exterior designs, and smart electronic components, ensuring a blend of performance, strength, and aesthetics.

For battery and energy storage applications, both companies aim to design lightweight, high-performance materials that enhance safety and thermal management while being cost-effective. These advancements will cater to electric vehicle batteries and home energy storage systems.

The agreement also covers advanced polymer solutions for future technologies, focusing on lightweight construction and durability. Furthermore, both Covestro and BYD are committed to creating eco-friendly and circular materials that minimize environmental impacts. Covestro will promote materials that use at least 25% alternative raw materials, aligning with their global strategy for sustainability.

“Collaborating with BYD is a perfect example of how materials science can drive industrial change. BYD’s growing range presents us with exciting material challenges, and we’re eager to turn our expertise into practical solutions,” said Lily Wang, President of Engineering Plastics at Covestro.

Meanwhile, BYD’s materials head emphasized Covestro’s reliability, noting that this new partnership will enhance their ability to deliver innovative solutions for the future of mobility.
