Indian Athletes Shine in Men’s Triple Jump at Commonwealth Games

On Day 8 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India saw a remarkable feat as Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu qualified for the men’s triple jump final. Praveen showcased a strong performance, securing his place with ease, while Selva had to battle through early challenges but managed to clinch his spot with a crucial final jump.

Praveen made a standout mark right from his first attempt, jumping 16.41 meters. Though this was shy of the automatic qualification score of 16.60 meters, it still placed him confidently in second among the qualifiers. Jamaica’s Jordan Scott led with a jump of 16.56 meters, with the top 12 jumpers advancing to the finals.

Selva’s journey, however, was much more dramatic. After two fouls in his initial attempts, he faced the threat of elimination. Determined to not end his competition early, he delivered an impressive final jump of 16.26 meters, which not only secured his spot in the final but also placed him in third overall.

Praveen’s strong start established him atop the leaderboard early on. Feeling confident, he chose to skip his second jump, allowing him to maintain his position as other competitors took their turns. Although Jordan Scott moved ahead, Praveen held steady and made it comfortably through to the next round.

In contrast, Selva’s early struggles could have ended his hopes, but he managed to deliver a solid performance when it mattered most, further establishing the strength of Indian athletics in the event.

Although neither athlete reached the automatic qualification mark, their jumps of 16.41 meters and 16.26 meters were more than enough for them to qualify for the final, showcasing India’s rising talent in the sport.

The men’s triple jump final is scheduled for August 1, where both Praveen and Selva will aim to convert their successful qualifications into medal-winning performances for India.
