India Names Test Squad for Series Against Sri Lanka Amid Injury Concerns

India has announced its squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, facing several challenges due to injuries among key players. Shubman Gill has been appointed as captain, with KL Rahul stepping in as vice-captain. The team features both seasoned players and newcomers eager to make their impact in Test cricket.

Unfortunately, India will miss some usual squad members. Nitish Reddy has been ruled out due to a thigh injury, preventing his participation in the tour of the UK. Additionally, Harshit Rana has also been sidelined shortly after returning from a four-month injury period.

There is still uncertainty regarding the fitness of Sai Sudharsan and Jasprit Bumrah. Although both have been included in the squad, their ability to play will depend on medical clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Washington Sundar will not be available for the first Test as well.

Update on Jasprit Bumrah

Recently, Bumrah made his comeback during the ODI series against England after taking a break following the Indian Premier League. He did not participate in the home series against Afghanistan or the T20 matches against Ireland and England.

Sources indicate that Bumrah will be on rest until July 30, after which he will undergo further assessments at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence to determine his return date.

Gurnoor Brar Joins the Test Squad

Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel will continue to serve as the preferred wicketkeepers. The pace attack, which raises some questions for the series, includes regulars Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Gurnoor Brar, who has impressed since his debut, has also been included in the Test squad.

With injuries already sidelining Reddy and Rana and lingering health concerns for Sudharsan and Bumrah, India faces crucial questions ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

Match Dates

The Test series is set to begin on August 15 and will run through August 27. The first match will take place in Galle, while the second is scheduled in Colombo. Before the series starts, India will also play a four-day practice match in Colombo beginning August 7.
