India Names Test Squad for Sri Lanka Tour
DELHI, India — India’s cricket selectors have announced the squad for the upcoming test series against Sri Lanka, starting August 15. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja have made the cut for the team.
The series will include two tests to be played in Galle and Colombo. Both teams are eager to earn crucial points in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, where India currently ranks fifth and Sri Lanka is in sixth place. This series will be vital as both nations aim for a spot in the 2027 WTC final.
Sri Lanka recently hosted Bangladesh, winning that series 1-0, but they faced a setback when they lost to the West Indies earlier this month. Meanwhile, India is looking to bounce back after suffering a 0-2 defeat to South Africa in their last home series. They did secure a win against Afghanistan in June, though that match was not part of the WTC.
Ahead of the tour, Bumrah and fellow batter Sai Sudharsan will undergo fitness tests. The pace attack also features Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Brar, who impressed with 10 wickets in his recent outing with India A.
In the spin department, Saransh Jain has been called up to replace Washington Sundar, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Jain has shown promise in domestic cricket, taking 188 wickets in 54 first-class matches, and he has previously been part of the India A setup. Alongside Jadeja and Jain, the spin attack includes Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav, the latter two being left-arm spinners. Suthar recently debuted against Afghanistan and had a strong performance.
Shubman Gill will captain the side, with Lokesh Rahul as vice-captain. Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are appointed as wicketkeepers.
India last toured Sri Lanka in 2017, winning a three-match test series convincingly with a score of 3-0.
