Just days after Rohit Sharma silenced retirement rumors with a stunning century at Lord’s, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has reaffirmed that there is “no question” about the veteran opener stepping away from international cricket.
The speculations around Rohit’s future in ODIs had grown louder during India’s series in England, especially after a struggle in form. Many suggested that the third ODI at Lord’s could be his last game for India. However, the 39-year-old responded brilliantly, scoring an impressive 138 runs off just 110 balls. This made him the first Indian cricketer to hit an ODI century at the iconic venue.
After his remarkable innings, Rohit stressed that external noise does not affect him. “My job is with the bat. I come to play and represent my country… There’s always been noise since I debuted, and it will continue as long as I am around. What truly matters is my performance on the field,” he said, emphasizing his ambition to be part of the 2027 ODI World Cup team.
While speaking in Agra on Friday during the mini auction for the fourth season of the UP T20 League, Shukla echoed Rohit’s sentiments. “Rohit Sharma is an integral part of our team and is actively playing. The rumors circulating in media and social media hold no value. As of now, there’s no question of his retirement,” he told reporters.

Shukla also supported the current leadership, rejecting claims that changes were necessary despite some criticism directed at head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. “Everyone has their opinions, but the selectors decide who stays in the team. The Indian team is performing well and winning, so there’s no need for any changes right now,” he explained.
Rohit’s spectacular century at Lord’s was a highlight in an otherwise disappointing ODI series, which India lost 2-1. This wrapped up a challenging tour for the team, as they had earlier faced a 2-0 defeat against Ireland and a 4-0 loss against England in the T20 series.
During the UP T20 League mini auction, Shukla highlighted the tournament’s crucial role in uncovering young talent from the state. He noted that the league has become a significant platform for budding cricketers, with 18 players from Uttar Pradesh currently playing in the IPL and many securing franchise contracts after showcasing their skills in the UP T20 League.
Shukla also mentioned the UPCA’s ‘Speed Hunt’ initiative, which identified 38 fast bowlers who can bowl at speeds of 135 km/h or more. He expressed confidence that this program would help develop quality fast bowlers in the state.
He noted that while only a few players have opportunities in the Ranji Trophy, the UP T20 League gives over 120 young cricketers a chance at competitive exposure, which he called the tournament’s standout feature.
UPCA chairman Dr. Sanjay Kapoor shared that six franchises bid for 282 players during the mini auction, with 45 players expected to be selected. He also revealed the pricing structure: 10 players at a base price of Rs 5 lakh, 45 at Rs 3.5 lakh, and the rest at Rs 2.5 lakh. Notably, twelve fast bowlers from the ‘Speed Hunt’ were included in the auction pool.
