George Russell clinched victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, marking his third win of the Formula One season and narrowing the gap to his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in the championship race.
Starting from pole position, Russell maintained his lead throughout the race. However, the situation became tense following two safety car periods, which gathered the competitors closely behind him. Max Verstappen, who started in eighth place, finished just 0.196 seconds behind Russell, applying pressure during the final laps of the race.
Isack Hadjar made an impressive return with a third-place finish for Red Bull, bouncing back after missing the last three races due to a wrist injury.
### RUSSELL FENDS OFF VERSTAPPEN
At the start, Russell built a solid lead ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Verstappen, and Hadjar. The race took a turn on lap 31 when Williams driver Alex Albon crashed, prompting the safety car and wiping out Russell’s significant advantage.
As the race resumed, Verstappen quickly maneuvered into second, overtaking Piastri. Yet, Russell successfully defended his lead. Another safety car came into play shortly after, caused by a collision between Franco Colapinto and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, which also involved reigning champion Lando Norris, leading to both drivers retiring. Norris expressed his frustration over the incident, calling for a ban on Colapinto, who received a 10-second penalty that will turn into a five-place grid penalty for the next race in Malaysia.
At the second restart, Verstappen was right behind Russell and stayed close until the finish. “We had a good race, a tricky first stint on the mediums, but we got a good restart,” Verstappen remarked. “On the final lap, George lost boost, and I got closer, but it wasn’t enough.”
Despite the pressure, Russell kept his cool and crossed the line for his eighth career victory and first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June. “It’s amazing to be back on top,” Russell said. “Every race since the summer break, I’ve felt stronger and more like myself.”
### ANTONEILLI BOUNCES BACK, HADJAR RETURNS
Russell’s win also influenced the championship standings. Antonelli, the points leader who started 16th after a crash during qualifying, managed to finish fifth. As a result, Russell cut the point deficit from 81 to 66 points after 15 races. Antonelli had previously demonstrated remarkable skill in recovery at Monza but couldn’t replicate that in Azerbaijan.
Hadjar capitalized on Piastri’s late mistake to secure third place. Piastri, who had started in third, found himself in trouble after locking up and finishing 14th in what was a challenging race for McLaren. “It’s been a long six weeks since my injury,” Hadjar commented. “It felt right to come back, and I took it step by step to regain my confidence.”
Charles Leclerc secured fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton took sixth place. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad finished seventh, despite a minor collision with teammate Liam Lawson that sent Lawson spinning. Esteban Ocon finished eighth, just ahead of Haas teammate Oliver Bearman for a solid points finish for their team. Carlos Sainz from Williams wrapped up the top ten.
This race showcased the resilience and determination of the drivers as the season continues to heat up.
