Exhibition Reflects on October 7 Attack
A new exhibition titled “Return to October” offers a compelling look at the tragic events of October 7, 2023. This immersive display combines videos and intelligence materials from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to illustrate how Hamas executed its cross-border assault.
Spread across 600 square meters, the exhibition was created by the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center, a nonprofit focused on honoring those who have served in Israel’s intelligence community.
Visitors will find various exhibits, including vehicles used in the attack, a film detailing the abduction of Israeli hostages, a mock-up of a Hamas tunnel, and raw footage compiled by the IDF.
Key Insights Into the Attack
Yossi Kuperwasser, head of the Institute for the Research of the Methodology of Intelligence, emphasized that the exhibition reveals how systematically Hamas planned this attack over a long period. “They gathered significant intelligence, and this exhibition provides examples of their methods,” he explained.
Documents found by the IDF also indicate a cautious stance from Hezbollah, suggesting they avoided joining the attack to dodge a strong Israeli military response. The materials shed light on the relationship between Hamas and Iran, highlighting Tehran’s involvement.
Kuperwasser warned that threats from Israel’s enemies are persistent. “They are always planning large-scale attacks,” he cautioned, urging vigilance against complacency.
Displays of Evidence
One section of the exhibition shows a map pinpointing the 114 locations where terrorists crossed the border into Israel on the day of the attack. Approximately 4,300 Hamas fighters entered, followed by over 1,500 others described as “uninvolved civilians.” Display items include weapons from various countries and a kidnapping kit featuring handcuffs and syringes intended to subdue hostages.
Another area shows personal belongings recovered from Israeli homes damaged during the attack. There are also displays of military instructions from former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, which detail aggressive tactics against Israel.
The Educational Impact
The exhibition doesn’t stop at the attack itself; it also highlights the educational programming used by Hamas to radicalize children. Books and photographs depict how children are taught to view armed resistance as honorable.
A later room exposes Hamas’s manipulation of media and international organizations, showing that many journalists killed in Gaza were connected to Hamas. The displays include a white Toyota pickup truck and motorcycles used in the assault, which reveal how these vehicles were smuggled into Gaza.
The Toll
As visitors navigate the final corridor, they see the names and faces of the 1,224 victims—ranging from soldiers to civilians—who lost their lives during the attack. This powerful reminder stresses the heavy toll the violence has taken on communities.
The exhibition concludes with emotional footage of Israeli hostages reuniting with their families and a hopeful picture depicting a thriving southern Israel, reinforcing the need for resilience amid tragedy.
