Zimbabwe Captain Sees T20I Series as Level Playing Field
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has downplayed the idea that India will be overwhelming favorites in the upcoming T20I series. He believes the three-match contest, starting Thursday at Harare Sports Club, will be more evenly matched than many think. Following the opening match, the teams will clash again on July 25 and 26.
India arrives in Zimbabwe looking to bounce back after a tough tour in Europe. Under new T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, the team faced disappointing defeats—losing 2-0 to Ireland and 4-0 to England in their last series. In addition, they dropped the ODI series 2-1 while Shubman Gill was at the helm, leaving them eager to improve in this new challenge.
Despite India’s strong credentials in T20 cricket, Raza insists that this series will not be a walkover. The experienced all-rounder, who has played 136 T20Is, highlighted that Zimbabwe’s recent performance proves they can compete.
“Both teams will have an equal chance in this series. I’m confident that Zimbabwe has been playing consistent and exciting cricket, so this series will be entertaining,” Raza said.
Zimbabwe’s Strong Performance
Zimbabwe’s confidence stems from a series of impressive results over the past year. They notably shocked Australia by 23 runs during the Men’s T20 World Cup, a defeat that led to Australia’s unexpected exit from the tournament. Additionally, they secured wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, showcasing their growth in T20 cricket.
Raza acknowledged that while India is in a phase of transition, so is the Zimbabwe team, which is also bringing in younger players.
“Yes, India is going through changes, but Zimbabwe is also evolving. I don’t see this series being one-sided,” he commented.
India will take solace from their last visit to Zimbabwe in 2024, where they came back from an initial loss to win the five-match T20I series 4-1, led by Shubman Gill.
With both teams keen to make a statement, Raza anticipates a thrilling and closely contested series.
